______________
HUSK, GO AWAY (껍데기는 가라)
Husk, go away.
Stay April with only substance
and husk, go away.
Husk, go away.
at the Gomnaru 2) in the year of Tonghak, 3)
only cry stay alive
and husk, go away.
Thus, again
husk, go away.
Here, since Asadal and Asanyeo 4) who exposed
their breasts and secret parts,
standing neutral before the wedding hall,
will bow each other
shining their shyness,
husk, go away.
From Mt. Hallasan 5) to Mt. Paekdusan, 6)
remain the fragrant breasts of earth
and go away with all the ironwares.

1) Shin Dong Yeop (1930-1969) was born in Buyeo.
2) A ferry's name (Bear ferry) in Cheollado province.
3) The farmers' uprising led by Cheon Pong Chun in 1894 in the Yi Dynasty, Chosun (1392-1910). Tonghak means "Eastern Learning" as a reaction against Catholicism, which was known as "Western Learning" in Korea. Choi Che Woo, the founder of Tonghak school of religion, aimed at a religious system fusing into one of the ethics of Confucianism, the Taoist cultivation of energy, and the creative character and rebirth in Buddhism. Tonghak brought very important new ideas to Koreans. The idea of dignity of all men led to a new democratic society and the new nationalism eventually influenced the independence movement of March 1, 1919.
4) Legendary husband and wife who lived in the occupied Paekche region of the Unified Shilla Kingdom (8th century). In the reign of King Kyungdeok, the reconstruction of the Pulguksa Temple was begun in 751. Asadal was commissioned to design and build the twin pagodas - Sokkatap and Tabotap - in front of the main hall of Pulguksa. His young and lovely wife, Asanyeo, whom he recently married was left at home. Asadal missed his wife a great deal and worked long hours in order to return home the sooner. Asanyeo made the difficult journey to Pulguksa and waited for many days to see her husband but in vain. Thinking that her husband would never return to her, one day she plunged into the pond calling his name.
5) The Korea's second highest mountain (1,950m) with the 360 parasite volcanoes in Chejudo Islands, South Korea.
6) The Korea's highest mountain (Mount of Eternal Snow, 2,744m) in North Korea.
- Translated by Paul Lee, Poet, 이풍호 시인, 1996
